Producing content is not just the flavor of the week. As the Internet matures, more and more people and companies are authoring extensive volumes of information and putting it online for free. All this great information is creating a powerful link and information structure. Google (and the other search engines) favor content producers increasingly each day.
Thousands of companies are racing to provide better more attractive content than you have, and for free. Web 2.0 brought user-generated content and user-filtered content to the world outside of normal distribution cartels (such as the Associated Press); so that content production is flourishing, and it is slowly moving over to the non-tech industries. Any individual or business who gets started producing content now will be much better off in the future than if they wait until their industry’s information gets there already; and it becomes harder to achieve link authority daily. With a new blog every second, the time to start was yesterday.
There are some exceptions: You can have a blog post go completely viral or perhaps create an extremely valuable tool or reference of some sort. However, in general, getting a brochure site or cookie cutter shopping cart site to rank on the search engines today is extremely unlikely. You need a blog, and/or a social networking community or affinity site that grows. Dynamic content is preferred by us, and so it is with Google, and the others. They must deliver what we (Internet surfers) want, and they get it from us.
