Joomla is a lot like Drupal. They are direct competitors and it has ranked directly below Drupal in the open source content management system awards. I have not designed websites myself using Joomla, because I choose to build with Drupal since it’s extremely well at organizing multiple content types and has other distinct features for customization.
From my research, Joomla can do more “out of the box” things with a basic installation than Drupal. It supports similar features and has a large user base, but I’ve also read it’s less customizable than Drupal and not as powerful with user and role permissions.
You can almost cut and paste the discussion I had about Drupal into the Joomla description. Like Drupal, I also think it’s better than WordPress and it supports a large number of features, but it was ranked recently behind Drupal and in this discussion seems to be below Drupal in options and future customization abilities. I chose Drupal when I compared the two, but you may want to look at Joomla for your own website if you already have a knowledge of it.
