Another pitfall is positioning the mouse too far from your body. The neutral position for your shoulder is relaxed. Raising your arm is tiring and will lead to shoulder and neck pain. The goal is to be able to use your mouse so that your elbow is at 90 degrees and your shoulder muscle is relaxed. To accomplish this, you can purchase a keyboard/mouse tray, adjust the height of your chair or desk, or put a chair next to you and stack some books on it.

Keep your mouse close to your body and at the right height in order to remain at a neutral position.

When I am on the road, I create a makeshift desk by putting a chair with no arms and a flat seat as close to me as possible. Then I stack several books, a mouse pad, and my mouse on top of the seat. I adjust the stack of books until I can mouse with my shoulder and elbow in a neutral position without having to reach for my mouse. I have been able to replicate this process in many different locations and have shown several people how to do it as well.
