In addition to using the wrong fingers to press certain keys, a common mistake computer users make is to pronate, or twist, the hand in order to reach for multiple keys with a single hand. For example, it is common for people to create the symbol “A” by pressing Shift and “a” with their left hand. In order to press the key combination with one hand, you must twist your hand, which can cause carpal tunnel or other wrist problems. To prevent pronation and its associated problems, press Shift with your right hand and the “a” key with your left hand.

Avoid pronation, or twisting your wrist to press multiple keys at one time.

Another way to eliminate pronating your hand and to leverage larger appendages where possible is to use an alternate input device (i.e. a foot pedal) and to press keys using your feet. I will discuss foot pedals later on—they are incredibly valuable tools for increasing productivity.
