Due to the strenuous nature of using a computer, computer athletes should not overwork themselves. In order to reduce wear and tear, a computer athlete takes breaks and avoids unnecessary computer usage—for example, by eliminating excessive instant messaging and emailing when a phone call is possible. Instant messaging offers many benefits, including having a transcript of the conversation and being cost-free. The problem is, because we can talk much faster than we can type and tend to want to instant message conversationally, instant messaging can cause excessively fast typing and lead to increased wear and tear.
