Name: Mamma.com, Inc.
Alexa Traffic Rank: 3, 157
Market Capital: 29.42 Million Dollars
Revenue Model: Based on advertising “provider of integrated marketing solutions to online advertisers.” Basically, pay per click.
Overall Competitiveness: They are a lumbering company that has shown almost no innovation since its initial launch. They have done a great job marketing though and will probably retain a large portion of the marketplace. They have existing branding and very valuable relationships with advertisers and publishers but are just now slowly developing specialized Meta search. It’s too little innovation, too late, and too slow.
Years in Business: Since 1996.
Strategy: Keep their technology the same; continue to market with the same advertising pitch “search the search engines” “mother of all search engines.” . Recently they have begun an initiative to develop specialty Meta search engines and have launched a health specific specialty meta search. Other modernizations include toolbars and other standard search tool that the majority of Meta search engines also offer. They also launch new services (like the one below) periodically:
“On June 20th Mamma announced the launch of its Mammahealth.com initiative. This specialized search application is the first in a series that will offer Internet users a unique search tool that queries “on-line & real-time” specialized data bases. The application provides search results from various specialized sources, and aggregates and presents content to the user in a consistent fashion (Mamma.com).”
Strengths: Well established, demands large market share in the Meta search engine industry. It has legal relationships and distribution agreements in place with Infospace and all the major search engines.
Weaknesses: Very little to no advances in technologies. It is a raw Meta search engine that currently uses virtually the same technology as it began with. Their “algorithm” for rating is very basic and they implement almost not marketing plan.
Other pertinent info: acquired downloadable research Meta search software copernic for around $30 million.
