<p>Ah yes, it all starts with a plan:</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>The blog &#8211; social media marketing in 2012 starts with a modern website</strong> (sometimes referred to as a blog &#8211; short for weblog).  This website must grow weekly, becoming a more and more popular and a larger and larger online resource.  This website must exist as it&#8217;s own domain, and be owned by you, so that this &#8216;cyber real estate&#8217; is owned by you as the business and presence grows.  A blog on WordPress.org, or Blogger, or any non-topic-specific behemoth platform will not work for competitive searches &#8211; the host must be known for related content for best rankings on competitive searches.  The site must be on it&#8217;s own machine, or a host that is known for well optimized, related content.  A virtual server from a company like Hostgator.com is very inexpensive.  We  offer free hosting on our servers for the first year to offset setup costs with savings.  If you have not done so already, it is time to move your website into WordPress, or some other content management system (CMS) which you personally and all of your staff can edit, change, and add to &#8211; a website cannot be a static brochure anymore.  CPC, CPA and other auction style advertising models have removed all profit from paid search in the long run &#8211; because the big players are getting involved, and they are willing to buy the market.  Unless you are very heavily capitalized, and have a crack, state of the art marketing team, you cannot compete on an even playing field.  Fortunately, content trumps distribution, which is automatic &#8211; and those same large players are not known for innovation, controversy, viral popularity, niche popularity, or non-commercial content &#8211; and, thus,  the value of these are elevated online.  A small or start-up company can compete &#8211; but not head-to-head, and not on a level playing field financially.    Even the largest of companies need  to seek out viral and social marketing experts, outside of their normal chain of command, because innovators and forward thinkers are generally not rewarded in large companies.</li>
<li><strong>The platform &#8211; WordPress has over 60 million blogs</strong>, and nobody really knows how many other websites are in WordPress &#8211; some say over 200 million sites.  This means everything for an interactive website, because the users must be able to use the software.  Your visitors will not know why, necessarily; however, if your website (which really needs to be a social media enabled, interactive community) is in WordPress, they will be able to use it.<a title="why wrodpress is the right CMS for most people" href="http://socialmediasystems.com/rothmanguide/wordpress-website-cms-overview/">  &gt;&gt;more about WordPress here&gt;&gt; (If your users can use your software, and they are compelled to do so, your website will succeed)  </a></li>
<li><strong>Strategy considerations &#8211; picking a battle that you can win</strong>: I often have this discussion with realtors: they all want to come up on &#8216;city state real estate&#8217; searches, because those are the most searched for; but have you ever wondered by whom?  There are, by some estimates, over 200,000 licensed real estate agents in the US: they all search city state real estate often &#8230;lets see , that is how many per state&#8230;.the most expensive words you can buy?!  One of the problems with Real Estate is that it pays so well that it is hard to get a Realtor to listen to any strategy other than what all the other realtors are doing.  I call this &#8220;pack mentality&#8221;.   I would equate it to guys who concentrate on metrics and measurements and call them self marketers, when all their decisions are made on main-stream accepted and forensic data.  The fallacy is that all this information is worthless when it comes to online marketing: if you do what the &#8216;main-stream&#8217; or your peers are all doing, you will fail, from sheer numbers.  The true innovators are the ones making real money &#8211; and they do not share their secrets until they stop working.  In online marketing, following the pack is sure failure: even more risky than trying something new.  For most people and companies, innovation is the only solution that MAY work, while following the &#8216;pack&#8217; is sure failure.  If you are mainstream in real estate, the numbers suggest that you will not be here next year!  Online marketing favors the new, the quick, the controversial even, the different.  Conventional &#8216;following the leaders&#8217; will not work online, for anybody but the leader.  Online, it is better to become an expert, than to listen to one.  What are you an expert at?  Start there.  What you know has value online, whatever it is , related or not: and somebody with that same interest needs what you are offering.   Make your strategy based on your abilities, interests and assets: if you love what you are doing online, you will do it well, and often; and you will succeed.  They all live in houses, take vitamins, buy presents, have health concerns, raise children&#8230;there is always something to sell to those that you can reach.  Pick the battle that YOU can win.</li>
<li><strong>Your profiles, outlets, fans, and links &#8211; your social network:</strong>  I post a good, original article or two per week mostly.  We require our clients to post weekly, as this is necessary for any presence with any reach: to maintain the profiles and build the fans.  If you cannot, or will not do this; then you need to pay somebody else to do it.   I can always find somebody to post for you, and we are training an ever increasing number of people to do this well; we have priced this ongoing weekly posting at $100 per month or more depending on the marketplace, and the qualifications and reach of that blogger.  I know of very few business that cannot cash flow such an effort from the leads that are generated from the postings and ever growing social media profiles where the posts are bookmarked, shared, liked, tweeted, etc&#8230;we have ongoing clients in almost every industry.    Think of it as your entire advertising budget &#8211; easier to swallow that way. <li><strong>MySpace -</strong> I barely maintain my MySpace Profile, but being the oldest, it is one of the top ten on Google when somebody Google me sometimes, and, according to the demographics that follow, MySpace  it is actually loosing terribly to Facebook unless you are specifically interested in 18-20-year-olds.</li>
<li><strong>Facebook is a must -</strong> we are all there more and more &#8211; gaining universal acceptance as a popularity driven social network with controllable levels of access: we have a business endorsement page &#8211; and I post my stuff.  If you are selling primarily to consumers, I suggest a much more robust viral marketing plan for Facebook &#8211; a fan club, thumbs-up tab, viral video, groups, meetings&#8230; in many business a full time Facebook marketer is indicated.  We are business to business mainly, and I only post my content there, it maintains one slot on Google for my proper name, the company name..I do not get leads from Facebook as a rule, but I do use it to maintain long term personal and business relationships.</li>
<li><strong>Linkedin.com &#8211;  Our largest referrer</strong>; largest source of clients other than our own site: I  have a complete profile and I post to about 25 groups that fit my audience: Linkedin.com has made some changes in the last year that re-ignited the site: I do very well here by just re-posting all my articles here.  I highly recommend a strong LinkedIn presence for B2B and for recruiting.</li>
<li><strong>Google+ &#8211;  I like the software, and I like the integration with Google mail</strong>, calendar, docs and other apps that I use for maintaining my presence.  I was able to transfer most of my presence elsewhere in minutes, and my network continues to grow on its own with nothing by my posting my articles to maintain.</li>
<li><strong>Associated Content</strong> &#8211; I have been writing here for years.  I get lots of traffic and the occasional client from this site.  The editor adds no-follow tags, so you will want to post in code or html view, and not use the editor.  Pay special attention to the categories: your post will appear there for a short time, and that link is very strong if you are spider-ed during that time.  Some of my articles with permanent links to clients have been seen many thousands of times in this one place.  A tip: always choose published elsewhere and display purposes only &#8211; this avoids their journalistic editors who rarely approve anything, and this makes your articles go live immediately.  Another tip: nobody gets through the editors, so my stuff still routinely gets picked up by yahoo news: <a href="http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/9115503/hooks_industrial_quality_pumps_centrifugal.html">http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/9115503/hooks_industrial_quality_pumps_centrifugal.html  (the clients REALLY like that)</a></li>
<li><strong>Activerain.com -</strong> this site recently sold so they may change things a lot, but this is an excellent site for anybody wanting to sell to Realtors or Lenders: and, if you post in code view, you can get strong links to you from hyper local pages.  On the flip side, over 200,00 real estate professionals are doing a very poor job of using this resource properly, resulting in a hyper-local page that is <em><strong>populated by their peers</strong></em> ranking on Google for people searching for their proper name and address &#8211; not so good!</li>
<li><strong>Realtown, Trulia, Realtor.com, Zillow, etc etc etc</strong>  &#8211; many main stream companies have tried to build a network of community blogs funded by advertising dollars from Realtors &#8211; one basic common problem: consumers do not like these sites, populated almost entirely by realtor listings and spam; overpriced, non-exclusive&#8230;Good to build links from in the right way.  If it is done the wrong way, these sites instantly outrank the real estate professionals&#8217; target site for his proper name &#8211; very bad, and not good for the advertiser.  Type in your proper name or company name with city and state into Google &#8211; is your TARGET SITE number one?!</li>
<li><strong>Niche communities and link building with high quality posts</strong> &#8211; run a search for the terms that you think will feed you traffic &#8211; see who ranks.  Do they allow posting?  Do they allow comments?  Do they need guest columnists?  Content is king!</li>
<li><strong>UpLog.org is unique &#8211;  exclusive</strong> to its bloggers: so that a properly optimized upLog.org blog ranks immediately for competitive geographical real estate and other searches, and our client is the only sponsor unless he or she chooses to sell advertising to related businesses on his or her upLog.org blog. <blockquote><p>5.  <strong>About email marketing</strong> &#8211; I have been appending and mailing out the<a href="http://business.uplog.org/"> B2B Home Business Network News .com – business.uplog.org</a> for one year now: I include some recent articles, how-to&#8217;s, a plug or two for a client..the double opt-in list is over 125,000 now with no unsubscribes.  I was curious, so I moved it to my proper name (israelrothman.com) to see how many people actually got it.  To my amazement, only one unsubscribe, just enough to know it is working.  This form of marketing is very effective: we purchased a couple of scrapers, and setup the PHPlist ope- source list program &#8211; if you do not want to do this yourself we can manage and build, setup and format your list: $500 down, $500 month.  We can reach, increasingly so, anybody you want to reach, any demographic, any search&#8230;we will promise a 100k list within a year for most industries of you use our strategies.  such a list can feed almost any business if done well.</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>6. <strong>About robo-calling</strong> or voice broadcasting &#8211; again we have been dong this regularly for about a year off and on: it is an effective and easy to generate traffic and even deals &#8211; we provide a trial to 1000 numbers that we scrape from key word search or  SIC code for $50, and provide the vocie-over if needed, and the list afterward to track results with follow up.</p>
<p>7.<strong> Reputation Management</strong> &#8211; you do not manage your reputation, somebody else will:</p>

<p>8.  <strong>Google places, Google maps, local search</strong> &#8211; all the major search engines have a local area &#8211; you must have properly optimized profiles there: if you do not want to do it, got to UBL.org and pay them $30 to do an ok job, or hire one of us at upLog.org to do it well for you (using their service as a tool) for $100</p>
<h3><strong>Costs and time frames</strong> &#8211; other than your time, there are some costs:</h3>
<p>Hosting &#8211; 5-10$ per month or more depending on size</p>

<p>“By the end of the forecast period, spending for internet advertising  will trail direct mail – the third-largest form of advertising – by  more than $30 billion, while spending on TV and print ads will each be  nearly twice as great as for online ads,” said John Gantz, chief  research officer at IDC.</p>
<p>Nevertheless, the long-term opportunity for internet advertising is  evident in terms of per capita spending, he said: “Total advertising  revenues equate to more than $105 per inhabitant of the planet, while  internet advertising revenues are less than $50 per active internet  user.”</p>
<p>Among the key findings:</p>
<ul>
<li>Keyword (search) ads will remain the dominant type of internet  advertising throughout the forecast period, capturing more than  one-third of annual online ad spending worldwide.</li>
<li>Display ads will be the next largest type of internet advertising,  capturing more than 20% of worldwide spending annually through 2011,  followed by classified ads with nearly 19% of all online ad spending per  year.</li>
<li>Spending in both categories will be pressured by rich media ads,  which are expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of  more than 50% during the 2007-2011 forecast period.</li>
</ul>
<p>“Marketers already recognize that online advertising must be  incorporated into any comprehensive ad strategy. This will continue to  drive growth in online ad spending well beyond the forecast period,”  said Karsten Weide, program director, Digital Media and Entertainment.</p>
<p>“However, there is still a lot of experimentation underway within the  category as marketers seek the optimal mix of ad types to reach their  target audience. This will fuel spending for all types of online ads.”</p>
<p>Additional highlights from IDC’s Digital Marketplace Model and Forecast:</p>
<ul>
<li>Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the Middle East and Africa  (MEA) will experience the fastest growth in Internet ad spending during  the forecast period with a CAGR of 42.1% for CEE and 29.8% for MEA.  Online advertising in Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) will also  experience dramatic growth with a 2007-2011 CAGR of 25.4%.</li>
<li>Internet advertising will make the greatest gains relative to total  ad spending in Western Europe, where online ad spending will capture  18.2% of total ad spending in 2011. This compares with a 16.3% share for  online ad spending in Japan and 14.6% in the United States.</li>
<li>More than $5 billion will be spent worldwide in 2008 in each of the  top four categories of online ads – adult content and gambling,  information, electronics, and computing. These will continue to be the  leading categories in 2011.</li>

Traditional Web 1.0 categories  include internet users, devices using the internet, internet buyers, and  B2C and B2B eCommerce. Web 2.0 categories look more closely at what  internet users are doing online, with breakouts by activity and gender.  The database also includes a detailed look at online advertising  spending worldwide. Forecast data for the 2008-2012 period is  supplemented by historical data from 2006 and 2007. <p>LifeSource Nutrition began when I lost my father, Al Brightman to pancreatic cancer. It was one of the hardest things that my family has ever had to endure. <p align="justify">To better understand why I am who I am with regards to sports, nutrition, God and athletes performing at their best, you must understand where I come from. I was raised around sports my whole life. My Dad always said: God, Family &amp; Country, in that order. My Father, AL Brightman was a blessed sportsman. He played professional basketball for the Boston Celtics where he was the first player to score 20 points in a game for them. He was team mates with Chuck Connors, “The Rifleman” as some of you may remember him. He also had a professional baseball contract for the Cleveland Indians. After his playing days he then turned to coaching: The Seattle University Men’s Basketball program was first, where he made it to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tourney. The Seattle Chieftains also were the first college team to beat the Harlem Globetrotters, back when they actually played and not pretend like today. He recruited the great Elgin Baylor to play for Seattle University and my Father was the youngest NCAA coach ever to win 100 games. He is in the Seattle U Hall of Fame as well as in the Long Beach Century Club Hall of fame, where he played his high school ball at Wilson high in Long Beach California. He scored 70 points in one high school game back when entire teams only scored 30 point on average. He was second in scoring in the nation for the NCAA. He also coached in the inaugural season of the ABA for the Anaheim Amigo’s. He was also a consultant to the Adidas Shoe Company. My older brother Ed also played baseball at Seattle University. He was a natural.</p>

<p>My other brothers (Ray &amp; Mark) played all sports through high school and were standouts as well. I played all three sports all the way through high school and played collegiate basketball in Florida. So as you can see, I have always been around fine tuned athletes all of my life. <p>Our  therapy blogger Judy (<a href="http://findatherapist.uplog.org/">http://findatherapist.uplog.org/</a>)    is no stranger to the idea of making money from a website: she has  been  doing so for years with a series of many websites that are lead   generators and and directories for therapists of all kinds.  Welcome to   upLog.org, Judy!</p>
<p>There are actually several ways to make money from a website or blog:</p>
<ul>
<li>Google  – Search engines will put adds on your sites and give you   most of the money – sometimes they will even offer to partner with you   50-50  for hot content</li>
<li>Affiliate programs – a modern trend is products and services being   sold exclusively through a series of independent professionals working   together, from home offices.  Overhead is very low, and these tech-savvy   entrepreneurs have learned to build web-properties of various kinds   that sustain them.</li>
<li>Selling advertising – online advertising can come in any shape,   form, or description: basically: if you have an audience (hits), you can   use those hits as a value statement, and put a value on banner ads,   text ads, video and other promotions like spotlights, featured listings,   etc.</li>
<li>E-mail marketing – the double-opt-in list at upLog.org is 90,000   strong and growing; a tremendous asset.  By building an opt-in list of   this size, you have an audience that you can reach at will.   If you can   consistently provide some sort of coveted entertainment, training,   support or other service with your e-mailings, you can and will develop   influence over that audience for merit.   To illustrate how valuable   such a list is when it i snot spammed: I have seen professional mailing   houses absolutely prove to me that 1,000,000 emails are worthless.     Yet, The Rothman Letter, which was the beginning here: fed me with only   about 3000 readers.  If it is done in our way: with real content, then   it is real publishing, and not anything spammy at all.  Therefor, you  do  not get on spam lists, and you develop a real opt-in asset  (permission  marketing).   PHP list set-up to run slowly works just fine  and does not  trip any triggers, as long as the content is clean.  We  have ways of  gently inviting people to join our list – and because our  content is  very broadly received, it is very effective.</li>

<li>By showing people what you can do for free, you will find yourself buried in paying work</li>

<p>I do not know why more marketing people do not realize this:</p>

<li>Stay busy helping someone, anybody, even if you have no clients</li>
<li>Do nice things for the clients you want</li>
<li>Show them what you did for them, they will want you to do it more</li>
<li>Create shining examples</li>
<li>People will assume that they paid you for this</li>
</ul>

<p>Most people make this task way harder than it needs to be: to intentionally create a better page to rank on a specific targeted key word search term is not that difficult:</p>
<ol>
<li>Run the desired search with a clean browser window that is not logged into Google or Yahoo or Windows or any toolbar. <strong><br />
 </strong></li>
<li>See what comes up on Google: your mind is superior to Google algorithms: pick the best four of five sites in the first page organic results (SRP&#8217;s)</li>
<li>Put up a perfectly optimized WordPress blog on your own domain, and/or an upLog.org blog: <a title="the roar of all of US!" href="http://uplog.org">optimize the blog for the desired search the way we do it</a></li>
<li>Put a page on the blog with desired search terms in the title, body, and tags (keywords).  Make sure every page of the blog links to the main page with anchor text that contains those same target key words</li>
<li> Put the links on this page (it can be your about page)  directly to the sites that you chose as being worthy in Google&#8217;s search results (above) with descriptions and text links to the pages containing the words.</li>

<p>Google Algorithms use very simple logic:   easy for a human to understand, albeit difficult to to get a machine to do.</p>
<p>Google, simply put,  serves us.</p>
<p>Just as the newspaper that we used to get on our doorstep was free &#8211; the quarter paid the paper boy.</p>
<p>The news was free because you had to look on page 134 section d to read the rest of your personal interest article, and you couldn&#8217;t avoid seeing the ads along the way.</p>
<p>The local car dealership, grocery store, and furniture dealer paid for the news, by buying those big colorful ads that are no longer cost effective because the readership has dwindled as real time news has become available online.</p>
<p>Now there is Google: the source of everything: news, sports, weather, information, research, and all of us, and again, all free.</p>
<p>This is all paid for by ads: ads in the margins and at the top that we cannot avoid seeing, as we use Google search: and also ads on billions of other web pages that we visit: built by other people (some of them by us) which display Google ads, put there by Google after  following you around, before you reach the web page!  Google has a toolbar that follows you around, tracks your habits, places the right ads&#8230;</p>
<p>If you want to understand Google completely, understand that Google serves us.  Google serves up to us what we are most interested in, according to us.   Google is an it, not a they: it is a machine, with many components, that simply tracks us, determines what we like, and does a good job of giving it to us.  Google is controlled by us, by the data that we provide: information about what we want, and information about what we have to offer.  In a way, Google is just a great big free middleman for information: the information still does not come from Google: it comes from us.</p>
<blockquote><p>In order to understand Google, (and the other search engines)  you must understand us;  Google search is a machine that simply serves us: our desires, our whims, our fetishes, and our needs.  Google serves.</p>
</blockquote>
<ul>
<li>Because we search for an item or word or video a great deal, Google rates it as important.</li>
<li>Because we subscribe to an author, that  &#8216;&#8221;source&#8221; of our authority (or what is called an RSS FEED) becomes rated in Google&#8217;s data base as being important: an &#8220;authority source&#8221;</li>
<li>All Google or any machine can do: they can follow patterns, and do predetermined things that we tell them to do in certain circumstances: in the case of the search algorithms, this is done bey tracing traffic patterns, analyzing the data, and rating information based on those patterns</li>
<li>The main algorithm is popularity: the more we historically like a page, the longer we spend there, the more often we visit: the more powerful that page is on competitive search.</li>
<li>While the proper formatting and arrangement of the data is also important, it is the value of the data that matters the most</li>
<li>As various unrighteous would-be manipulating hackers of the system are systematically foiled by filters and and layers as the technology improves: code standards will continue to become more uniform, and the temporary technical arbitrage enjoyed by, for instance, the &#8220;SEO&#8221; industry fro the last several years, will systematically evaporate, leaving only the value of the data as a criteria for organic search.</li>
<li>There are actually two ways to get on the top of search results; you can pay more than anybody else (PPC) for each click until your money is gone, or you can contribute the data that rest of us consider to be most valuable.</li>
<li>What we do here, at upLog.org as a team, and jointly on the social networks, search engines and even occasionally in the main stream &#8216;shrinking media&#8217;; is to intentionally become the best source of that best data: thus we rank on purpose without breaking any rules every time.</li>
</ul>

<h2>I.  The Plan</h2>
<p>We like to think of our plan always to be thinking outside of normal methods: we are what you may call : Guerrilla Marketers.  Therefor:  our plan involves multiple levels:</p>

<li>The unique video9s), article(s), and/or profiles and photographs that we want to use to spread our message by feeding it to the world.</li>

<li>The know how to place the article, format it, bookmark it,  post it, share it, re-post it,  and otherwise promote it so that it will be on top of Google by morning (within 24-48 hours)</li>
