The basic idea is build valuable content and get as many one way quality links as possible. Put some care into it and avoid the “I’m a realtor too” mentality and try to at least find some niche that will set you apart and can be used to garner links and traffic.
Don’t use a reciprocal linking service or software. I’ve written about the perils of reciprocal linking services before and it never seems to surprise me how many people are so caught up in looking for the “easy” solution to their search engine rankings that they end up hurting them even more.
Check out this past blog post for more specifics:
Don’t build a reciprocal links directory. Those pages offer no value to your visitors and are outdated (who uses small directories in 2007). If you want to harness the power of interlinking quality content, do it by blogging about it. Blog articles that reference other valuable content offer positive results for both your visitors and the link-ability of your site. This technique can actually build lots of quality one way links if used correctly.
Know that if you try to do your online marketing and SEO yourself, you’ll have to compete against professionals and sophisticated companies that are very good at what they do, so be ready for that. When I work for clients and am executing an aggressive campaign I absolutely love it when most of the sites I’m competing with are attempting to do everything themselves; it makes it that much easier to dominate the search engine results pages.
Tips on a quality linking campaign strategy:
In general your linking campaign needs to leverage or use the value you’ve created on your site to gain more links. If your site is new with small amounts of content, it’s going to be very hard to rank. You need to have a strategy for building content, marketing that content, and then leveraging that value to gain more exposure and links.

Thanks for your insight Solomon. As bad as I hate to admit it REALTORS are typically fairly well paid however the don’t realize that spending a little money on quality SEO will pay huge returns.
All of a sudden, one day, someone mentions that if you link your site to my site we will both get higher rankings with the search engines. The next thing you know REALTORS all over the nation were grabbing onto this low hanging fruit.
What everyone needs to realize is that it is not the number of links to a site, however the quality of the links. I would much rather have a few links from authority sites than alot of links from who knows who it is.
