A blog is a special kind of website, so technically the title is a little misleading. The problem with conventional websites is that updating them is simply too inefficient for daily or weekly changes. Most people have a web designer to whom they have to mail any changes or updates via e-mail or through their work network. This designer then has to build another page, add it to the navigation (made easier with includes and php) and proceed to update the site. It takes extra steps and wastes a lot of time.
There are content management systems which simplify the process and provide many of the same functions as blogs, but these often lack some of the great SEO benefits unique to blogs (I’ll specify a few below).
1. A blog automates the process of updating your site and neatly organizing everything by date and category. It’s great: you log in, write a post and blast it out to the world. The reason I believe most website should have one is:
2. It empowers website owners and their employees to edit and create their own content without an extra step, thus encouraging direct participation;
3. Currently, search engines prefer content, hence the “content is king” phrase. The more content you produce, the more youll drive visitors to your site. As a result, your SEO firm or consultant has more to work with;
4. It facilitates a new type of communication with your website visitors  a conversation. Instead of just a one way feed of data, they can comment, they can read and they can respond. It opens up your website to more user interaction: the more people comment on your posts, the more youll have going on at your site, the happier your visitors will be and the easier it will be to promote your site and drive traffic options;
5. It automatically gives you a way to connect long-term with your visitors. They can subscribe to your RSS feed, allowing them to be notified of updates to your blog via e-mail, a start page (like at Google) or through a feed reader;
6. They’ve become extremely cheap and accessible to individuals and businesses of any size.
With all of those benefits, it is hard for me to picture a business or an individual website that wouldn not benefit from a blog; just as amazing is how many websites have yet to take the jump.
